I packed up all my gear, then I rang High Valley Bike Shuttle to book a place on their ealy shuttle to the Monarch crest the next day. I drove over to the lunch loops, where I was going to ride the Holy Cross loop. I headed up the Pet-e-Kes trail, almost a 1/3 of the way up, a sharp rock ripped through my rear tyre and instantly deflated my rear tyre. I Put a new tube in and then rode back down the trail to the car and put a new tyre on. |
I rode back up the the trail, which was no hardship as the trail was good fun to ride, nice and narrow. With enough rocks to keep you on your toes. |
From the top of Pet-e-Kes I headed over to the Holy Cross trail. The Holy cross trail was as much fun as It was the last time I rode here, and I had to get off much less than the last time I rode it. |
I managed to shoot past a left turn, before back tracking and climbing up to the ridge before dropping down to the car park. The ride was about 8.5 miles. I then drove 130 miles east along the 50 to Hartman's rocks. |
I arrived at Hartman's rocks mid afternoon, it was warm and sunny, after I took my bike out of the SUV I clicked my remote switch to put the post up and the clamp snapped, luckily for me I had Clare's spare post so was able to fix it, then I headed off up towards the rocks. |
I forgot to take a map with me, so I just pointed my self down trails that looked good. Almost 70% of the trails I rode along were excellent singletrack. |

I really liked the section's of trail that climbed in and around the various clumps of large rocks scattered around the area. |
I headed away from the car, finding good trails as I went, until I decided it would be prudent to think about heading back. |
| There were trail markers in various places, but without a map they weren't much use to me. Joises and the gateway trail were both great to ride. |
The trails in this area are really good, But I bet the riding would be even better if a local was to show you his favorite route, riding the trails in the right order. |
As the sun started to set I headed back to what i thought were the rocks I'd come up through, but ended up coming across a down hill route, that was too full on for me, so I backtracked, and eventually found the route down. |
I got back to the car just before the sun set over the ridge. And packed up the bike. Asides from having to backtrack at one point i'd had a fantastic ride, and I'll make a point of coming back to Hartman's rocks to ride again. |

I drove another 70 miles east along the 50 to Salida and checked in to the Super 8 motel. Then went and wolfed down a meal at the Mexican restaurant Fiesta Mexicans as I was really hungry after my two rides. |
