We got up and had breakfast in our room, then packed our gear ready to ride the Watach Crest Trail. Originally before the Ketchum fires had changed my plans we weren't going to be able to do this ride as part of it can only be ridden on odd numbered days. It was quite cold first thing in the morning. |
We drove over to Guardsman's Pass and parked up, then road up the 2 mile hill known as Puke Hill, after all the riding we had done i found the climb to be tough but all rideable, although the steeper section towards the end defeated Clare. |
After Puke hill, the trail leveled out for a bit, and the views were pretty good. It as quite cool up on the ridge. |
The trail still had plenty of up hill sections in it, although on the whole the trail headed down hill, but you wouldn't really want to be riding a downhill bike on the trail, as you had to pedal a lot. |
At the Rocky spine neither of us fancied crashing on the hard rock, so we hike a biked down the steepest section. The lake below us was called desolation lake. |

It looked like a biggish cat had gone though this mud. This was the only patch of mud we saw on the trail.

After dropping down into the trees we took the turning for mill creek and dropped down into a meadow. |

Before the trail returned to the tress we sat on a sunny rock by a babbling brook, and east our lunch. Its was a very nice spot. |
We took the turn for Dog Lake, which meant we had to do some more climbing, which was at time steep. |
The Mill D trail was the best section of the ride, fast narrow singletrack with little drops and roots. The trail followed along side a stream as it headed the the valley. |

As we were nearing the end of the singletrack we went a bit mad do video clip captures on the trail. |

At the end of the trail we had ridden 16 miles. |
Now came the worst part of the ride 7.5 miles riding up hill on the road back to the SUV. It was only later when we were chatting with some locals that we found out we probably would have been able to hitch a lift back to our SUV. I suffered on the climb - whereas Clare found the the road climb quite easy. |
We stopped at the solitude ski resort and Clare had an Ice cream and I had a root beer float to refuel before riding on up the road, by now it was very hot as we carried on up the road. |
We were both bushed by the time we got back to the SUV, we headed back to the Hotel, stopping off at Christy Sports @ Deer Valley, where Clare bought some cycling clothes going cheap in the Sale. We then had a swim in the big pool at the hotel and used the Hot Tubs. |

We drove into Park City and ate at a restaurant called the Eating Establishment (‘Double E’). This restaurant has been going since 1972 when the ski resort first got going. I had trout and Clare had a very good grilled chicken salad. But the following day I suffered from a dodgy stomach - which had me diving into the bushes quite frequently.
When we got back to the Hotel I went on line , and booked a Hotel in Grand Junction for 1 night, and ordered a replacement gravity dropper seat post direct from gravity dropper, and a couple of Creative Zen 2MB stone MP3 players and had them shipped to the Hotel in Grand Junction - I've said it before and I'll say it again ordering stuff off the internet is the best way to buy stuff in the states as you don't have to pay any sales tax, and things are usually cheaper than in the shops as well. |
