We had another excellent home cooked meal at the B&B, then Clare went for a walk along a hiking trail near the B&B while I organised information on my laptop for upcoming rides. We left the B&B at 11 am and headed to Revelstoke and stopped at the Chalet bakery to buy some more tasty cakes. |
We then headed south on the 23 it was raining most of the time as we drove along the road, we arrived at the ferry crossing and only had to wait about 15 minutes before we boarded the ferry which was free to use.
The lake the ferry crossed was quite wide, we found a sheltered spot out of the rain while we crossed the lake. |
As we got closer to New Denver the rain started to stop, and by the time we arrived at New Denver it had stopped raining.
We arrive in New Denver at about 2.50pm, and tried to check in but we were too early, so we headed down to valhalla pure and bought some bear bangs, a map of the New Denver trails and Clare bought some hiking trousers. We then went to the New Denver bike shop Wilds of Canada which was a wooden shack off the main road and had a chat with Rob about the trails, he helpfully pointed out which trails were closed due to mining and suggested ways round the closures. |

Rob had suggested that the Wakefield trail was a difficult trail, so we decided not to do it the following day as part of a loop ride, but that I should do it today on my own. So we drove up the Idaho peak road to the trail head. As we drove up the road I was glad that we had not ridden up the road as it was very steep in places. |
At the Idaho peak car park I unpacked my bike and got my gear together and Clare went for a hike up to the watch tower.
As Clare walked up to the watchtower the clouds cleared up, and the views were great, there were a couple of other people hiking the trail so she wasn't too worried about bears. |
I set off down the Wakefield trail, wet vegetation over hung the trail which was less that 6 inches wide in places, within a couple of minutes I managed to crash my bike, as can be seen in the video below. Luckily for me i'd decided to wear my leg armour only picked up a few scrapes.
I stopped at the mining museum in Silverton and took some pictures, before riding back along the road, even though there was no shoulder there was hardly any traffic so the ride back was ok.
Asides from the upper section of the trail which I found a bit hairy at times, I enjoyed the wakefield trail. I was glad that I had done it solo as Clare would have been demanding a devoice if I had taken her down the trail 8-), Rob wasn't kidding when he said the trail was a difficult one. |
I got back to Villa dome just as Clare arrived in the SUV after driving down from Idaho peak. When we checked in the lady at reception let us know that the previous occupant had burned a pan in the room. Unfortunately they did not have any other rooms, so we had to make do with the smelly dome. Apart from the smell the dome was very nice, it had a double bed, a cooking area, sofa and tale and chairs, with a small section of the dome walled off for the shower room. We unpacked and while i washed the bikes using a hose provided by the owner Clare went for a run down to the lake.
After we had a shower we had dinner at the Valhalla Inn , we were lucky to get served as they stopped doing food at 8pm. And there's not much in the way of choice for places to get food in New Denver. After dinner we went to the gas station / store and bought some food for breakfast. |
