| We got up at 6.30 am and had breakfast at the condo before heading down to the Rush Coffee shop in Rossland where we had arranged to meet the Adrenaline adventures shuttle, we paid for the shuttle and loaded our bikes onto the shuttle then at 7.45 am we set off in convey to the end of the 7 summits trail 3km from the US border. Then we got in the shuttle bus and headed north to the start of the seven summits trail, there were 12 people in total on the shuttle. The shuttle arrived at the trail head at Nancy Greene pass at 9.15am. |

From the trail head the trail started out as singletrack which headed out through an open area, before connecting onto a dirt road. It was sunny but very cold at the start of the ride.
Start of Seven summits trail - Video (28 MB)
|
The trail climbed steadily upwards through the trees towards Lepsoe Basin |
The trail climbed fairly relentlessly but was all rideable just quite a slog. |
 |
The trail broke out of the trees onto another section of old road, it climbed quite steeply and I over took quite a few people on the way up, But had to wait for Clare as she was slower up the steep gradient. |
 |

At this point in the ride on the climb we started to catch up with other people from the shuttle, as you can see in the video the trail was well built with bridges over boggy bits.
More singletrack climbing - Video (25 MB) |
The trail eventually climbed up a point where you could see mountains to west and the views were pretty good. |
| After more climbing we came to a high point and stopped to take in the views of the surrounding mountains, a lot of clouds were bubbling up above the mountains and we could see rain showers off in the distance. |
After 7.5 km we got to the highest point of the trail at 2200m |
As we did the ride we kept on meeting up with a group of 3 people from Calgary, usually when we stopped to take photos they went past, and then when they stopped for a joint break we would go past them. |
At the point where there was a new section of trail that bypassed ski movie peak decent and climb, we decided to take the original route, which was great very good decent and tough climb. |
At this point in the ride it had warmed up enough to take off arm and leg warmers as all the climbing made for a warm ride, although when on the exposed ridge lines it was still quite cold. |
 |
 |

At Gibbards Jct we we had covered 13.7km |
| |
 |

18.1 km along the trail |
 |

At record ridge (21.4 km) the hail / snow started to come down quite hard, and it was pretty windy and cold, so we didn't hang around for too long, hoping we could ride out of the bad weather. |
 |
| We took a side trail which the sign said called rough trail to view point, which involved some hike a bike, and had a bite to eat and took in the views, before heading steeply back down to the main trail. At this point in the ride the sleet has stopped and it had started to get warmer again. |
The trail was quite dusty in places as we descended down through the meadows. |
At then end of the seven Summits trail 30.4km we headed down the Dewdney trail, the trail varied from narrow single tarck through the trees to fast double track sections of trail. |
We both though that the Dewdney was the best part of the ride, as it had great fast long sections of singletrack through the trees, and not too much in the way of climbing.
We got back to the SUV at 5pm. The seven summits trail had been an ok ride, but to me it felt as though there was way too much slogging up hills in thick forest vs decent descents. When compared to one of my all time favourites trails the Monarch crest trail in Colorado which also has plenty of climbing but the descents are way more rewarding. It wasn't a ride I'd go out of my way to do again, although we did really like the Dewdney section of the trail.
We tied to get food at the Rock Cut pub but it was shut, so we headed into Rossland and bought Buffalo steaks which we cooked back at the condo. |
